Mark Bray (Yes that’s me!) has been trying out some new brush techniques. I’m starting to get on a roll and have made quite a few paintings in the last month. Here are a few pics of the making of the latest painting from December 30, 2020.
I’ve been using a Japanese Calligraphy Brush from Dick Blick and Prang Watercolors on Mixed Media Paper.
I start by putting down outlines so I know where to cut it. I’m making these paintings 5″ x 7″ with a little border so it fits easily in some frames I found.
Ok, ready to go but now what do I do?
Here are the first few brush strokes. Starting wit the light colors and going darker. I just run through the rainbow, yellow, orange, red, blue, (no indigo), violet , green, then black.
Here I’ve filled the page with color. I love all the little hairlines strokes from leaving the brush loose. Also leaving some white space really adds to the dynamics. I could stop here. It really does look cool this way and lighter than my usual style but I really like the contrast the black adds.
Here is is completed. It is definitely a little looser and has more flair than my normal style. Leaving the brush hairs loose really give a lot more texture. Working quick is my thing. It allows me to get the spontaneous feeling expressed before I loose them. I will be doing more experiments for sure.
Thanks for stopping by. Be sure to sign up for my newsletter. I haven’t put one out in a while so make sure you are signed. I’ll be getting a new newsletter out soon. Have a great day!
Enjoy!
