I love Deep Purple and have been listening to them pretty much my whole life. By the time I was 5 years old I was collecting my first Deep Purple 45 rpm record, Smoke On The Water. Now that we are in the future in 2020 they are back with a new record, Whoosh! I guess that is how time feels like it flies by.
The lineup for Whoosh! has been together for 20 years. That is way longer than the Deep Purple I grew up with. They are really sounding good. Ian Gillan’s voice is great. He stays in his range and belts out his signature style. Some of the arrangements sound a bit like old Yes. That is probably the influence more of Don Airey on Keyboards and and they even throw in the instrumental, Steve Morse on Guitar. It is great to see Ian Paice and Roger Glover continue to hold the rhythm together in the amazing way they do.
There some really good songs on this record and Throw My Bones got stuck in my head for a few days. I never thought I would be humming a new Deep Purple song in 2020! They seem to be presenting a very interesting perspective of life on Earth and our prospects for the future. (the space man dissentigrates!) Definitely check out the videos, they are heavy.
Whether you are new to this type of hard rock, which they continue to do, or you are hoping to get a feel for the old days this album will do it. It is solid to the end with a lot of reasons to give it many listens.
Enjoy,
