Pileated Woodpecker Chopping Off A Limb

Pileated Woodpecker Trimming A Tree

This week I caught a Pileated Woodpecker up in my tree whacking away at a limb. I was able to get some pretty good pictures of it. It’s always nice when one of those big ones stop by. They are really impressive and almost the size of a crow.

Just in case you didn’t know, the Pileated Woodpecker is the one that looks like Woody Woodpecker. Because of heir size and flaming-red crest they really stand out. Here is a link to learn more about them at the Audubon Guide to North American Birds.

They can really put some holes in a tree. We saw him working on it for quite a while then next day we came out and the limb was on the ground. That woodpecker had chopped clear through it. I guess that limb needed trimming anyway.

You can see how deep that hole is getting and on the next picture the limb is gone. Because he does such a good job we may not have to hire tree trimmers this year.

That was a pretty big limb. If he hadn’t have chopped it down then it could have have fallen on us!

Compared to the weather we have had lately it really is starting to feel like spring is coming. The birds, squirrels and deer have all been coming out of hiding and our yard is full of animals. There were eight deer out back the other night. We keep our little Shady cat monster caged up in a catio to give the wildlife free range of our yard.

Enjoy your day!

PS – Here is a post of some pics of the last day of summer so you can remember what the yard looks like with leaves, hummingbirds and flowers.
